James O’Donnell is an internationally renowned architect born in the United Kingdom on August 15, 1961.

James O’Donnell KCSG, FRCM, FRSCM, HonRAM was born in 1961 and currently serves as the Master of the Choristers at Westminster Abbey in addition to his role as the Abbey’s Organist. Since  2000, he has served in this capacity.

After receiving his degree in 1982, he was offered the position of Assistant Master of Music at Westminster Cathedral.

In 1988, he was promoted to Master of Music there. James was a Professor of Organs at the Royal Academy. It was between 1997 and 2004. And he has the role of Visiting Professor of Organ there.

O’Donnell was inaugurated as President of the Royal College of Organists in July 2010. It’s marking the beginning of his time in that role.

After serving as President-Elect until January 2011, he took office as President and remained in that role until June 2013, when Catherine Ennis was sworn in as his successor.

He is the achiever of many awards. His Hyperion recording of the Martin and Pizzetti Masses was performed. He won the Gramophone Award for Record and Best Choral Record.

 In 1999, the Westminster Cathedral Choir, which he directed, became the first choir to be honored with the Royal Philharmonic Society Award. This accomplishment took place under his supervision.

 In December of 1999, as he was leaving Westminster Cathedral, he was presented with the papal accolade of Knight Commander of the Order of St. Gregory the Great, also known as KCSG.
