Jim Bob Cooter Tennessee spent his collegiate years as Tennessee’s backup quarterback before joining the Vols’ coaching staff as a graduate assistant in 2007 and 2008. 

Since then, he has been an assistant for various NFL teams, including the Indianapolis Colts, Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos, Detroit Lions, New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, and others.

As per the reports made public on Monday, he is returning to Indianapolis, as ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler writes that Jim will serve as the Colts’ new offensive coordinator. 

Under their new head coach Shane Steichen, the Indianapolis Colts are anticipated to appoint Jim Bob Cooter as the offensive coordinator. 

Although the other members of the offensive coaching staff have yet to be revealed, this hiring has been widely reported.

His hiring brings him back to where he started his career from. The move marks the Colts and Cooter’s reunion after Cooter began his NFL coaching career with Indianapolis as an offensive assistant from 2009 to 2011. 

Cooter spent one year each on the staffs of Kansas City and Denver after working with Peyton Manning before joining the Detroit Lions in 2014.

James Robert Cooter was born in Fayetteville, Tennessee, on July 3, 1984. Even though his real name is James Robert Cooter, he is widely known by his nickname, Jim Bob. 

He is an American football coach who oversees the passing game for the National Football League’s Jacksonville Jaguars (NFL). 

From 2015 to 2018, he was the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions. Before that, he was the New York Jets running backs coach. 

He was a University of Tennessee football player who began his coaching career there before moving on to the NFL. 

Cooter is most known for his time spent playing with the Detroit Lions; as the quarterback’s coach, he joined the team in 2014 and worked closely with Matthew Stafford. 

In 2015, he served in the same capacity, but after Joe Lombardi was let go mid-season, he was appointed the offensive coordinator in interim status.

Then, in 2016, Cooter was brought on board as the offensive coordinator, a position he would retain for three seasons under Caldwell above before the Lions changed. 

Cooter joined the New York Jets coaching staff under Adam Gase after the Detroit Lions coaching staff was overhauled. 

Gase served as the Broncos’ offensive coordinator during Cooter’s brief stay in Denver. Cooter served as the Jets’ running backs coach for two seasons. 

Cooter worked as an offensive consultant on the Eagles coaching staff in 2021 under head coach and former Colts offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni. 

Their paths may have crossed in the past. Steichen was the offensive coordinator at the time and is currently the head coach of the Colts. 

After serving as an offensive consultant in Philadelphia for a season, Cooter became the passing-game coordinator on Doug Pederson’s staff with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
