Why did Don Shane retire? Let us find out!

Loved by people all around the world, the famous sportscaster, unfortunately, passed away at age 70.

Former Channel 7 (WXYZ TV) sportscaster Don Shane passed away at his California home on Friday, February 24th, 2023.

The news was confirmed by his wife Mona, who appeared on the channel on Saturday alongside Diana Lewis, another WXYZ veteran news anchor, to remember and pay tribute to the late sports reporter.

Shane’s cause of death has not yet been revealed.

Shane was widely known for his energy, enthusiastic delivery, and ability to connect with viewers and fans. He spent much of his career in Detroit, Michigan.

Shane started his more than three-decade-long career in the early 1980s in Detroit, anchoring for Channel 4. Following short stints in Chicago and Boston, he joined Channel 7 in 1989, becoming a top sports anchor, covering many important events in sports history.

He retired in February 2012 at 60 to spend time with his family. While leaving WXYZ TV, he remarked:

“I have been really blessed. The things I have been able to see and do have far exceeded my expectations.”

Throughout his career, he was honored with several awards for his work. Don was awarded multiple Michigan Emmys and the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association’s Michigan Sportscaster of the Year award.

He passed away surrounded by his wife Mona and children Justin and Lindsay.

His fans were shocked and saddened to hear about his demise. Tributes started pouring in after an announcement was made regarding his death.

People called him a fantastic, incredibly talented, and one-of-a-kind man. Many fans thanked him for his services and highlighted that he was the best in the business.

Shane’s colleagues and peers paid their respects and tributes to the legendary sportscaster. Those who worked under him called him an ideal mentor and thanked him for teaching them valuable lessons.

Don’s career included doing much more than sportscasting, and he took on any challenge in his Dare Don segments.

That also includes a painful encounter with former Lions’ great Chris Spielman. It left Don with three broken ribs and had many of us asking why he wanted to do it!
