He was born December 13, 1967, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Zolak. He was the football team’s waterboy at Ringgold High School in Monongahela, Pennsylvania, where his father, Paul, was head coach and athletic director. 

Future NFL quarterback Joe Montana played for Ringgold and gave Zolak a football, which he rubbed for luck before every game.

Zolak was the starter quarterback and punter at Ringgold High School and lettered four times. Ringgold basketball forward Zolak was a four-time letterman.

The Patriots and new coach Bill Parcells wanted to upgrade their quarterback position in 1993. 

They signed Scott Secules and tried to sign Steve Beuerlein but failed. They allowed Hugh Millen to trade.

He did not play in 1991 but started four games in 1992 and had his best statistical season. After Drew Bledsoe was chosen in 1993, Zolak was his backup for six seasons. 

He replaced Bledsoe when he was injured but only started three games. He was released after the 1998 season and signed with the Jets and Dolphins in 1999, playing one game for Miami before retiring. 

He became a New England sportscaster and football analyst after retiring.

Being behind Hodson and Millen on the depth chart, Zolak looked unlikely to play in 1992. 

Millen started five games before being injured, and Hodson took over. Zolak debuted in the fourth quarter against the Saints in early November. 

In relief of Hodson, he completed five of nine passes and threw an interception as the Patriots fell 31–14. Zolak made his NFL debut the following week against the Indianapolis Colts. 

The Patriots won their first game, 37–34, after he completed 20 of 29 passes for 261 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception.

He was selected AFC Player of the Week for his effort. Zolak led his squad to its second-season win over the Jets the following week. 

He completed seven of 16 throws for 102 yards, and Jon Vaughn ran 110 yards as the Patriots won 24–3.
