Austin Theory is the ring moniker he uses when performing on SmackDown, where he is currently signed to the WWE. Presently, he plays A-Town-Down Under in a tag team with Grayson Waller.

He competed in pro wrestling before joining WWE. He competed in the independent circuit for several World Wrestling Network promotions, including Full Impact Pro (FIP) and Evolve.

The Theory debuted his Progress Wrestling on April 1, 2017, losing to Keith Lee, Jason Kincaid, and Blaster McMassive at Progress and Evolve.

August 12, 2016, saw Theory’s WWN debut at FIP’s Heatstroke. His Evolve debut was against Darby Allin at Evolve 78 on February 24, 2017. Theory hired valet Priscilla Kelly. 

On December 18, he fought Fred Yehi to capture the FIP World Heavyweight Championship at Evolve 97. 

He defended the title against Yehi in an “Anything Goes” event on January 13, 2018. Zack Sabre Jr. defeated Theory for the Evolve Championship at Evolve 100 on February 17. 

After 175 days, Theory defeated Keith Lee to capture the WWN Championship at Evolve 103 on April 6. He defended his championship against DJ Z at Evolve 104 on May 19. 

On December 15, Theory won the Evolve Championship in a triple-threat match against Fabian Aichner and Roderick Strong at Evolve 117. 

He defended the championship against Darby Allin at Evolve 121 on February 15, 2019. Theory defeated Anthony Henry, Kyle O’Reilly, Raul Mendoza, and Leon Ruff in consecutive months to defend the title. 

Theory beat JD Drake in a winner-takes-all battle for the Evolve Championship and WWN Championship at Evolve 131 on July 13 after a backstage brawl. 

He defended the Evolve Championship against Drake and Josh Briggs at Evolve 134 and 136 on August 25 and September 21, respectively. He lost the title to Briggs at Evolve 139 on November 9.

The Theory was lost to Rey Horus in his Crash Lucha Libre debut on June 16, 2018. Theory defeated Willie Mack, Bárbaro Cavernario, and Sansón to win the Crash Heavyweight Championship on March 2, 2019. 

Austin Theory Role in WWE

He auditioned for WWE in February 2018. On April 8, Theory defended his WWN Championship against Marcel Barthel on day 4 of WrestleMania Axxess.

Theory attended NXT TakeOver: Toronto on August 10, 2019. Five days later, WWE announced his contract and Performance Centre report. December 25’s NXT saw Theory lose to Roderick Strong’s North American Championship open challenge. He won his debut NXT match against Joaquin Wilde on January 8, 2020.

In January 2021, Theory and Gargano lost the first round of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic to Kushida and Leon Ruff. 

The Theory helped Gargano defend the North American Championship for months. After losing to Kyle O’Reilly on July 20, Theory returned to NXT 2.0 to attend Indi Hartwell and Dexter Lumis’s wedding.

WWE drafted Theory for SmackDown in 2023. On May 12, he lost a World Heavyweight Championship tournament triple threat match to Bobby Lashley and Sheamus on SmackDown.

After Pretty Deadly interfered, Theory retained the US Championship against Sheamus on SmackDown two weeks later on May 26. 

He defended the title against Jey Uso and Sheamus on SmackDown on June 9 and July 7. The Theory was attacked backstage before his August 11 championship defense against Santos Escobar. 

Theory fell to Escobar’s Latino World Order stablemate Rey Mysterio in an impromptu title match later that night, ending his second reign at 258 days. 

After The Miz intervened, he defeated LA Knight the following week to become the #1 US Championship challenger, but he lost it at Payback on September 3.

September 15’s SmackDown featured Theory and Pat McAfee before The Rock’s People’s Elbow attack. He formed A-Town Down Under with Grayson Waller. 

On September 22, SmackDown saw their first triumph over The Brawling Brutes (Butch and Ridge Holland). 

Theory and Waller lost to Owens and Carmelo Hayes on December 15’s SmackDown in the US Championship #1 Contender Tournament first rounds.
