Most vertical jump advice is a list of exercises. This isn’t that.
It’s a ten-week programme, and the length isn’t arbitrary — it’s the single biggest variable in whether any of this works.

Why ten weeks, and not the six you were hoping for
Here’s the cost up front. Plyometric programmes shorter than ten weeks produce a small effect on countermovement jump height. Programmes longer than ten weeks produce a large one. In the meta-analysis by de Villarreal and colleagues, that gap was an effect size of 0.58 against 1.87 — more than triple.
So a six-week jump programme isn’t a faster version of this. It’s a worse one.
What can you expect from doing it properly? Markovic’s review puts realistic gains at roughly 4.7% to 8.7% on vertical jump height. On a 20-inch vertical that’s about one to one and three-quarter inches.
That is a real, meaningful change. It is not ten inches, and anyone promising you ten inches in six weeks is selling something.
The three things that actually drive the number
Volume, intensity, and duration. The same research found the best results came from programmes running more than ten weeks, more than twenty sessions, and more than fifty jumps per session at high intensity.
Note what isn’t on that list: variety. You don’t need forty different drills. You need a handful done hard, often, for long enough.
Weeks 1–3: build the brakes
You jump high by producing force. You land safely by absorbing it. Most people skip the second half and get hurt in week five.
- Box jumps — 4 × 6, step down every rep, never jump down
- Pogo hops — 4 × 10, minimal ground contact, stay stiff through the ankle
- Squat — 3 × 8 at a weight you could do two more reps with
- Romanian deadlift — 3 × 8
- Calf raise, slow lower — 3 × 12
Twice a week. Roughly 56 jumps a session. Yes, that’s already over the fifty threshold — that’s the point.

Weeks 4–7: add speed
This is where depth jumps enter, and where most programmes go wrong by starting them too early.
- Depth jumps from a 12-inch box — 5 × 5, land and leave the ground instantly
- Approach jumps, three-step — 4 × 5, full effort
- Squat — 4 × 5, heavier
- Split squat — 3 × 8 each leg
- Pogo hops — 3 × 10
The rule that matters: if your contact time with the floor is getting longer, the set is over. Plyometrics stop being plyometrics the moment you start grinding.

Weeks 8–10: peak
Volume drops. Intensity doesn’t.
- Depth jumps from 18 inches — 4 × 4
- Approach jumps — 5 × 3, measured, full recovery between
- Squat — 4 × 3, heaviest of the block
- Everything else: cut in half
Test your vertical at the end of week 10, not before. Testing mid-block tells you nothing and costs you a session.
How to actually measure it
Chalk your fingertips. Reach up flat-footed against a wall and mark it — that’s your standing reach. Jump and mark again. The difference is your vertical. Do it the same way every time, same shoes, same surface.
Measure in week 1 and week 10. Nothing in between.

Over fifty at high intensity is the threshold the research points to. Quality collapses long before quantity does, so stop the set when contact time lengthens.
Do I need a box for depth jumps?
A 12- to 18-inch step works. Higher isn’t better — above about 24 inches most people spend too long on the floor and it stops being a plyometric.
Will this work for basketball too?
Yes. Nothing here is volleyball-specific; it’s general vertical jump development.
